WordPress or Custom Website for Your Rwandan Business?
Published · 4 min read
The Short Answer
Most businesses in Rwanda are best served by WordPress: a company website, a blog, or a small online shop. Choose custom web development when your website has to run part of your business, such as bookings with your own rules, a client portal, or a system that connects to your other software.
Side by Side

When WordPress Is the Right Choice
WordPress powers a large share of the world's websites, and for good reasons. Choose it when:
- Your website mainly presents your business: services, about, contact, and perhaps a blog or news section.
- You want to update text, photos, and prices yourself.
- You need a small online shop. WooCommerce, with a gateway plugin, can accept Mobile Money and cards.
- You want to launch quickly and keep the budget low.
The trade-off is maintenance. WordPress, its theme, and its plugins need regular updates, and every extra plugin is extra risk. See WordPress security best practices and the WordPress launch checklist.
When You Need Custom Development
Choose a custom website or web application when:
- Your process is unique. A tour company with its own pricing per group size and season, or a school with its own admissions steps, often outgrows booking and form plugins.
- People log in. Client portals, staff dashboards, or member areas are usually cleaner as custom software.
- It must connect to other systems, such as your accounting software, an internal database, or a direct MTN MoMo API integration.
- You have stacked many plugins to make WordPress do something it was not designed for, and the site has become slow or fragile.
- Performance at scale matters, with heavy traffic or large amounts of data.
The trade-off is cost and dependence on developers: every change to a custom feature needs a developer, so choose a team that will still be there to support it.
What About Speed on Mobile Data?
Either approach can be fast or slow. A WordPress site with a heavy page builder and many plugins is often slow on mobile data. A lean WordPress theme, good caching, and optimized images can be very fast. Custom sites can be very fast too, but only if they are built with performance in mind. Ask any developer to show you a live site they built, and open it on your own phone.
A Middle Path
Many businesses start with WordPress for their public website and add custom development only where it is needed, for example a custom booking feature or a small client portal next to a WordPress site. That keeps costs down while giving you exactly what you need where it matters.

FAQs
Is WordPress good enough for a business website in Rwanda?+
For most business websites, yes. WordPress handles company sites, blogs, and small online shops well, it is cheaper and faster to build, and you can edit the content yourself. It needs regular updates and backups to stay secure.
When do I need a custom-built website?+
When your website has to do something specific to your business that standard tools do not do well: a booking system with your own rules, a client portal, a marketplace, integrations with your internal systems, or very high traffic.
Is a custom website more secure than WordPress?+
Not automatically. A well-maintained WordPress site with few, trusted plugins is very secure. A custom site avoids common WordPress attacks, but its security depends entirely on the quality of its code and on someone maintaining it.
Which is cheaper, WordPress or custom development?+
WordPress is usually much cheaper to build because themes and plugins already exist. Custom development costs more up front because everything is written for you, but it can cost less over time if it replaces several paid plugins or manual work.
Can I start on WordPress and move to a custom website later?+
Yes, and many businesses do. Keep your domain and content under your control, and when you move, set up redirects from old pages so you keep your search rankings.
Does Register.rw build both WordPress and custom websites?+
Yes. Register.rw's in-house web designers and developers in Kigali build WordPress websites and custom web applications, and host both on Register.rw's cPanel servers.
