How to Accept Mobile Money on Your Website in Rwanda

Published · 4 min read

Why Mobile Money Comes First in Rwanda

Most people in Rwanda pay with their phone. MTN MoMo is the largest mobile money service, Airtel Money is second, and Visa and Mastercard are used mainly by international visitors and some urban customers. A website that only accepts cards will lose many local buyers at the last step, so for a Rwandan audience, Mobile Money should be the default and cards the second option.

Your Three Options

1. A payment gateway (best for most businesses)

A payment gateway is a licensed company that takes the payment for you and settles the money to your bank or merchant account. One integration usually covers MTN MoMo, Airtel Money, and cards. Gateways available to Rwandan businesses include:

  • IremboPay, from Irembo, licensed by the National Bank of Rwanda. It accepts MoMo, Airtel Money, cards, and bank payments in RWF and other currencies.
  • Flutterwave, a pan-African gateway licensed in Rwanda, supporting mobile money and cards.
  • Pesapal and DPO Pay, regional gateways with mobile money and card support, popular with tourism and international businesses.

Fees, settlement times, and onboarding requirements change, so compare the current terms directly with each provider before you choose. Look at the transaction fee, how many days until you receive the money, whether they support RWF and USD, and whether they have a ready plugin for your website platform.

2. The MTN MoMo API directly

MTN runs a developer portal, with a Rwanda version at momodeveloper.mtn.co.rw, where businesses can get API access to request payments from MoMo wallets. The customer gets a prompt on their phone and approves the payment with their PIN.

This gives you more control and can work out cheaper at high volumes, but it only covers MTN customers, so you would need a separate Airtel Money integration and a card solution as well. It also means more development work: sandbox testing, production approval, and handling payment status updates yourself. It suits larger businesses and platforms, not most small shops.

3. A WordPress or WooCommerce plugin

If your site runs on WordPress, many gateways offer a WooCommerce plugin. You install it, add your merchant keys, and customers can pay at checkout without any custom code. This is the fastest route for a small online shop. Only use plugins published by the gateway itself or a well-known developer, and keep them updated. See WordPress security best practices.

What a Developer Sets Up

Whichever route you choose, a reliable payment integration includes:

  1. HTTPSHTTP secured with encryption (TLS), so data between the browser and server can't be read or tampered with in transit. on every page. Every Register.rw hosting plan includes a free SSL certificate.
  2. Server-side confirmation. The website must confirm each payment with the gateway, usually through a webhook or callback URL, before marking an order as paid. Never trust the customer's browser alone.
  3. Clear payment states. Mobile Money payments can take a moment while the customer approves on their phone. The site should show "waiting for approval", then success or failure, and let the customer retry.
  4. Order and receipt emails from your own domain, so customers know the payment arrived.
  5. Test payments in the gateway's sandbox before going live, then one small real payment with each method.
  6. Secure storage of API keys on the server, never in the website's public code.

What You Need Before You Start

  • Your business registration documents from RDB
  • A bank account or merchant account for settlement
  • Clear prices in RWF, and in USD if you serve international customers
  • A refund policy and privacy policy on your website
  • A domain and hosting with SSLThe certificate technology behind HTTPS. Modern 'SSL' is really TLS, but the name stuck.. See .rw domains.

How Long It Takes

With a gateway plugin on WordPress, the technical setup can take a day or two. Most of the waiting is usually the gateway's business verification. A custom integration, or a direct MoMo API connection, takes longer because of testing and approval. For the full picture, see how long it takes to build a website in Rwanda.

FAQs

Can my website accept MTN Mobile Money in Rwanda?+

Yes. The usual route is a licensed payment gateway that supports MTN MoMo, Airtel Money, and cards in Rwanda, such as IremboPay, Flutterwave, Pesapal, or DPO Pay. Larger businesses can also integrate the MTN MoMo API directly through MTN's developer portal.

Do I need a business registration to accept online payments?+

In practice, yes. Payment gateways and the MoMo merchant APIs require you to verify your business, usually with RDB registration documents, identification, and a bank or merchant account for settlement.

Is it better to use a payment gateway or the MTN MoMo API directly?+

For most businesses, a payment gateway is better: one integration covers MTN MoMo, Airtel Money, and cards, with a ready payment page. A direct MoMo API integration gives more control but only covers MTN, needs more development work, and usually suits higher volumes.

Can a WordPress or WooCommerce shop accept Mobile Money?+

Yes. Several gateways offer WooCommerce plugins, so a WordPress shop can accept MoMo, Airtel Money, and cards without custom code. Check that the plugin is maintained and comes from the gateway itself or a trusted developer.

What does a website need before it can take payments?+

An SSL certificate (HTTPS), clear prices in RWF, a privacy policy and refund terms, a working contact method, and a server-side way to confirm each payment, usually a webhook or callback URL from the gateway.
