How to Choose a Web Designer or Developer in Rwanda
Published · 6 min read
What You Are Actually Buying
When you hire a web designer in Rwanda, you are rarely buying just a design. A working business website has five parts, and a good quote makes clear who handles each one:
- The domain name, such as
yourbusiness.rw, registered through an accredited registrarAn accredited company that sells and manages domain registrations on a registry's behalf.. See what a .rw domain is. - Hosting, the server your website lives on, ideally with cPanel so you can manage it yourself.
- The design and build, usually on WordPress or a custom codebase.
- Business email on your own domain, such as
info@yourbusiness.rw. - Support and maintenance after launch: updates, backups, and fixes.
Many projects in Rwanda involve three separate companies for these parts: a designer, a hosting company, and a domain registrar. That works, but when something breaks, you have to work out which of them to call. Knowing this up front helps you compare quotes fairly.
Web Designer or Web Developer: Who Do You Need?
The two titles are often used interchangeably in Rwanda, but they describe different skills:
- A web designer decides how the website looks and reads: the layout, colours, text, and how visitors find what they need.
- A web developer writes the code that makes it work: fast pages, contact forms, Mobile Money payments, booking systems, and anything custom to your business.
A simple brochure website is mostly design, built on a tool like WordPress. An online shop, a booking system, or a client portal needs real development work. Most businesses are best served by a team that does both, so ask any designer you talk to who writes the code, and ask any developer who handles the design.
Typical Prices and Timelines in Kigali
Prices vary widely, but published 2026 agency packages in Kigali give a useful reference point:
| Website type | Typical price (USD) | Typical timeline |
|---|---|---|
| One-page landing site | 260 to 450 | About 1 week |
| Small business site, about 5 pages | 450 to 700 | 1 to 2 weeks |
| Larger site, 8 to 12+ pages | 800 to 1,600 | 2 to 4 weeks |
| Online shop or custom system | Quoted per project | 3 weeks or more |
On top of the build, budget for the domain and hosting every year. A
.rw domain costs 15,000 RWF per year and cPanelA popular web-hosting control panel for managing sites, email, databases, and files through the browser. hosting starts at
40,000 RWF per year at Register.rw. For a full breakdown, see

Eight Questions to Ask Before You Hire a Web Designer or Developer
- Will the domain be registered in my name? It should be. Your domain is your web address and your email. Whoever owns it controls both.
- Who hosts the website, and will I get access to the hosting account? You should be able to log in, see your files, and take backups, even if the designer manages it day to day.
- Can I update the website myself? If you want to edit text, prices, or blog posts, ask for WordPress or another content management system, and for a short handover sessionA way for a site to remember a specific visitor across multiple requests, usually backed by a cookie..
- Is the price fixed, and what does it include? Ask for the number of pages, the features, how many rounds of changes, and whether the domain, hosting, SSLThe certificate technology behind HTTPS. Modern 'SSL' is really TLS, but the name stuck., and email are included.
- How fast is the website on a phone? Most visitors in Rwanda browse on mobile data. Ask to see a live site the designer built and open it on your own phone.
- Will the site be set up for Google? At minimum: page titles and descriptions, a sitemap, fast loading, and help with your Google Business Profile.
- How do I reach you after launch, and how fast do you reply? WhatsApp support, in English or Kinyarwanda, is normal in Rwanda. Ask for a reply time, not just a phone number.
- What happens if I want to leave? You should be able to take your domain, files, and database with you. See how to migrate a website.
Red Flags
- The domain is registered in the designer's name. This is one of the most common problems businesses run into when they try to move their website. Check any existing domain with a WHOIS lookup.
- No access to your own hosting account. If only the designer can log in, you can't take backups or move.
- No live websites to show. Screenshots are not enough. Ask for links to sites that are online today.
- A price with no written scope. Without a list of pages and features, the final bill tends to grow.
- "Guaranteed first place on Google." Nobody can guarantee a ranking. Honest designers explain what they will do, not what Google will do.
- No plan for after launch. WordPress sites need updates and backups. Ask who does them, and what it costs.
Freelancer, Agency, or Do It Yourself?
| Option | Best for | Watch out for |
|---|---|---|
| Do it yourself | Very small budgets, simple sites | Your time, and security updates |
| Freelancer | Simple sites, tight budgets | Availability, and who owns the domain |
| Agency | Businesses that want a team and a process | Higher cost, and separate hosting companies |
| Designer that also runs hosting | One point of contact for everything | Make sure you still own your domain |
If you want to build it yourself, every Register.rw hosting plan includes one-click WordPress install, and our WordPress launch checklist walks you through going live.

FAQs
How much does a web designer charge in Rwanda?+
Published 2026 agency packages in Kigali put a small business website at roughly USD 450 to 700 for about five pages, and USD 800 to 1,600 for larger sites, before domain and hosting. Should my domain be registered in my name or the designer's name?+
Always in your own name or your business's name. If a designer registers your domain in their name, they control your website address and your email, and moving away from them later can become difficult.

How long does it take to build a website in Rwanda?+
A small business website usually takes one to four weeks, depending on the designer and on how quickly you provide your content. Online shops and custom systems take longer.
What is the difference between a web designer and a web developer?+
A web designer decides how a website looks and reads: layout, colours, text, and navigation. A web developer writes the code that makes it work, including speed, forms, payments, bookings, and custom features. Most business websites need both.
