What DNS Management Means

DNS is the internet's address book. When someone types your domain, DNS tells their browser which server holds your website, and tells other mail servers where to deliver email sent to your address. If you're new to how these pieces fit together, our guide to domains, hosting, and DNS covers the basics.

DNS management is simply control over those answers. With it, you decide where your domain points, without opening a support ticket for every change.

What You Can Do With It

Keep your domain here, host your website anywhere. Built your site on a website builder or hosting provider elsewhere? Add the A or CNAME record they give you, and your Register.rw domain points at it.

Set up business email with any provider. Add the MX recordsA DNS record that tells other mail servers which server handles email for a domain. and the SPF and DKIM TXT records from Google Workspace, Microsoft 365, or your email host, and mail to your domain starts arriving there.

Create subdomains. Point shop.yourbusiness.rw at an online store and booking.yourbusiness.rw at a booking tool, each with its own record. Our guide to .rw subdomains explains how.

Verify your domain. Services like Google Search Console and Microsoft 365 ask you to add a TXT record to prove you own the domain. You can do that in a minute.

How to Manage Your DNS Records

  1. Log in to client.register.rw.
  2. Open Domains and choose the domain you want to change.
  3. Open its DNS Records page.
  4. Add a new record, or edit or delete an existing one, then save.

Changes usually take effect within minutes, though some networks can take longer to see them while old answers expire from their cachesA temporary store of already-fetched data, kept so it can be reused quickly instead of fetched again.. Our guide to DNS propagation explains why.

A tip before you change anything: write down or screenshot your current records first. If a change breaks your website or email, you can put the old values back straight away.
